The updated, slimmer version of the PlayStation 5 offers a surprising feature: each panel can be removed independently. Unlike the original PS5, the new version has a black bar in the center that divides each panel into four pieces instead of two. This unique design allows users to create exciting patterns using Sony’s new “Deep Earth” collection panels.
These new cover options, including Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver, each priced at $60, were showcased before their Friday launch.
While experimenting with all three covers, it was observed that the red variant stood out as the most vibrant, featuring a bright color with a deep sheen that looks appealing in various lighting conditions. The Volcanic Red DualSense controller also received praise for its classic red-on-black scheme.
With its satin finish, the blue cover complements dark backgrounds well, while the silver option, resembling bare steel, may not appeal to those who wish to avoid associations with the Cybertruck.
Switching between these covers is relatively easy, as they are labeled with the classic PlayStation “shape” buttons. Although removing each panel requires some effort, it is manageable if done carefully.
While third-party companies like DBrand have yet to release alternative colors, the individually swappable plates open up possibilities for creative designs in the future.
Images of the PS5 with no shell and shots of each color variant, including a glimpse of the new DualSense controller colorways, were provided for comparison. The overall experience of experimenting with the different covers showcased the potential for personalized and unique designs for the PS5.
