Take-Two Interactive’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick, addressed the impact of the Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) trailer leak, acknowledging it as a disappointment but emphasizing that it did not adversely affect the development team. The highly anticipated game, subject to intense global anticipation, saw its trailer leaked one day before its official release in December.
In response to the leak, Rockstar, the game’s developer, opted for an early official reveal. This unexpected move sparked mixed reactions among fans, creating a division between those excited about the reveal and others saddened by the premature leak.
During an earnings report, Zelnick shared his perspective on the leak, expressing disappointment for the team while asserting that it did not have a detrimental impact. He noted the team’s excitement upon the official trailer release, stating, “in terms of the leak, that’s always disappointing for the team, but ultimately, I don’t think it hurt us.” Zelnick’s optimism is rooted in the overwhelming success of the GTA 6 trailer, which set a record as the most-viewed video game reveal on YouTube within its first 24 hours, accumulating over 174 million views.
While Zelnick remains relaxed about the leak now, it contrasts with the immediate frustration expressed by several GTA 6 developers in December. The leak disrupted their plans for commemorating the culmination of years of work despite their pride in seeing their efforts unveiled.
Looking ahead, gamers’ anticipation for GTA 6’s release in 2025 continues to grow. Although the exact release date is yet to be defined, Rockstar’s historical pattern suggests a potential launch in September or October, consistent with the release of GTA 5. However, the possibility of delays remains common in recent AAA releases. Gamers are advised to await the official announcement from Take-Two and Rockstar regarding the precise release date.
